“Sure, but you can’t think you’ll get out of this stadium unnoticed. Everyone’s already seen your face remember?” Tal said.

“Leave that to me.”

* * * * * * *

When the fighting in the pit had gotten out of control she had been tempted to have her personal escort of Avant-Garde go down and end it. That was until the funnel of foreign power had opened up and fused every field of energy in the vicinity into one focal point. Her imperial mystics were still reeling from the abuse. It was a good thing too. They had fainted, all but Chuchi, before seeing what had transpired in the pit. She herself would have been drained if not for the fact that power was benign to her. Indeed much of it had originated with her.

Turning to regard her fidgeting daughter the Imperial Heir said, “You must remain calm, Fraya. He has come here for his own reasons.” Which she prayed they would soon learn.

Metteta had told her daughter who the young man was and now the Daughter of the Empire was bursting with excitement with the news. However, if she carelessly revealed what had taken place to the mystics the Imperator would know in a flash of awareness. He was increasingly weary of tidings from the east and placed everyone under suspicion. Metteta couldn’t make herself despise the imperial spies. In an empire fraught with peril their craft was a necessary evil. For her they were little more than an annoyance. None of them could read her no matter how often they tried. Please let me find him. She prayed. Notwithstanding what she had told her daughter Metteta believed with all her heart that he would come to her one day. And now he comes.

“Mother, I can still feel him in the city, though he masks himself well. Let me go to him.” the Daughter of the Empire said.

“No, sweetie. Not yet. Let him choose when.” Metteta said rising and drawing her gowned around her. She didn’t want the girl cognizant of the threat she lived under before time. Her Lord father had become desperate in his quest to free the Neath’ulema and his laborers. Very few adepts could weld the kind of power necessary for that feat. Their entire physical constitution required realignment in order to handle that much unrefined energy and like herself her daughter was such a person. Her Lord father had left her alone until recently knowing that the girl was all Metteta had left, and like any mother she would fight with the strength of being to prevent harm from coming to the fruit of her womb. So he waited and plotted his schemes thinking Metteta unaware of the enticements of power he set before her daughter. That he loved her and his granddaughter wasn’t a point of debate. She didn’t deny that. However, his love and idea of what was best often excited her father to do some fey things.

“Mistress, the guards would like to take you back to the estate.
